Guest posts! Interviews! A Reddit AMA! Giveaways! It’s the latest random roundup!

MJ-12-newcoverSo I’m back in the New York City area, and feeling a bit less burned out than when I posted last, which was toward the end of a very enjoyable but very long week-plus of travel. And as the rollout of MJ-12: Inception continues, I have a bunch of stuff here to share with you.

Goodreads Giveaway! It’s almost over — you have about nine hours left to sign up and get your hands on one of ten copies available. Click here to enter! (You need to be a Goodreads member to do it, which isn’t all that onerous. You like books, right? Do it!)

Guest post! Today I did a guest post for Alternate History Weekly Update — an excellent site if you’re a fan of alt-history and/or historical fantasy — on confronting racism and sexism in quasi-historical fiction, something I faced head-on while writing MJ-12: Inception. I can only hope I did it justice. Check out the post here.

Interview! I talked with Stephen Geigen-Miller over on his blog, part of a series of interviews he’s done with authors about breaking into the publishing industry. Smart question, really nice guy. Here’s what I had to say.

Thriller Roundtable! As part of International Thriller Writers’ The Big Thrill, I’m doing a roundtable with a bunch of other talented thriller authors about characters with moral ambiguity. We’ll be trading posts all week, so surf on over if you have a chance.

Reddit AMA tomorrow! I’ll post about this separately in the morning, but for now, consider this a reminder: I’m doing a Reddit AMA (that’s Reddit-speak for “Ask Me Anything”) all day tomorrow on r/Fantasy. I’ll post a link in the morning, and you can, well, ask me anything. I’ll also do beer pairings with your favorite books, since that was a fun thing I did last time.

And…whew. That’s about it. Obviously, still feeling a bit whirlwinded — I’m totally making that a word — from all the stuff going on. I’m very pleased by the reception MJ-12: Inception has received, and I thank you for giving it a go, spreading the word, and all that good stuff. My thanks also go out to all the folks who’ve hosted interviews, guest posts, giveaways, etc. You’re all awesome!

A new review of MJ-12: Inception, plus a guest post

img_6681I’m deeply humbled and gratified by the newest review of MJ-12: Inception from Tracey (aka TrinityTwo) over at the Qwillery. Here’s the bit that knocked me over and made me do a bit of a Kermit flail:

Martinez is truly a gifted writer in that MJ-12: Inception has a distinct and utterly different flavor than his previous series. Although I only know about organizations like the CIA from books, movies and literature, his portrayal of the inner workings of government programs seems authentic. I enjoyed reading the confidential reports written from the perspective of top officials in the CIA. Martinez, a master at genre blending, has created an exciting new series by mixing a pinch of James Bond to a dash of the X-Men and then combining that with a dose of politics and old-fashioned cloak and dagger espionage.

Dude. That’s pretty swell, as they might say in 1948. You can read the whole review here, along with a guest post I wrote about my approach to writing a brand-new series.

I’m writing this in the cafe at Borderlands Books in San Francisco, which explains the rather meta image attached to this post. It’s also another lovely excuse to remind you that Borderlands is pretty much the only game online right now to get a signed copy of MJ-12: Inception, and they also have the Daedalus trilogy books in stock with my scrawl on them. Click here to get started!

Here’s something to look forward to: I recorded a Ditch Diggers podcast today, which should land online over the next few days. It was incredibly fun, and hosts Mur Lafferty and Matt Wallace are the absolute best. I’ll ping everyone when it hits, but in the meantime, there are far worse ways to spend your time than checking out past episodes, which include conversations with fantastic humans like Fran Wilde, Kameron Hurley and Chuck Wendig.

I’m heading home Saturday, and really looking forward to that. San Francisco is lovely. Borderlands is amazing. DragonCon was its usual fantastic awesomeness. But you know, I’m good with the travel for a bit. Thank you all yet again for all the love and support you’ve shown MJ-12: Inception. It really matters and you’re all awesome.

Assorted launch week news, plus signed copies of MJ-12: Inception now available from Borderlands!

I’m now in San Francisco! And yeah, I’m rather looking forward to getting home and resuming some semblance of normalcy after a busy month-plus of travel. I was in the air for most of MJ-12: Inception‘s launch day yesterday, so there’s a few items here I want to call out.

  • I was a guest on Chuck Wendig’s blog! Chuck is, of course, a fine human and a fantastic author, and I deeply appreciate all the support he’s shown over my short but busy fiction career thus far. In the blog post, which you can find here, I talk about everything I learned from The Magic School Bus. You didn’t read that wrong.
  • I was also a guest on Mary Robinette Kowal’s blog! Another fine writer and amazing person as well! On her series My Favorite Bit, I talked about superpowers and character development.
  • Finally, I was a guest on Janice Hardy’s Fiction University blog! On this one, I got to talk about opening one’s novel and different ways to do that so you can seize the reader’s attention and never let go.

I very much enjoyed visiting Borderlands Books last night here in San Francisco. The whole team there is just amazing and lovely, and we had some great conversations and some fine local beer. Right now, Borderlands is the only place on the Internet where you can order signed copies of MJ-12: Inception, and all you have to do is click here. (Well, you have to pay, of course.)

If you’re in the market for MJ-12: Inception, I strongly encourage you to get a signed copy from Borderlands. It’s a few bucks more than Amazon, but it’s signed and you’re helping to support the best darn genre bookstore around. Do it! I should also note that Borderlands has signed copies of the entire Daedalus trilogy as well!

Finally, thank you all so much for all the support and love you showed this new book yesterday. Your reviews and retweets and Facebookery matter so much when it comes to spreading the word, and I deeply appreciate it.

MJ-12: Inception is out today!

Today’s the day! MJ-12: Inception, first of the MAJESTIC-12 series of Cold War spy-fi thrillers, is officially released today in hardcover from the lovely folks at Night Shade Books! I posted the acknowledgements yesterday, but I want to thank everyone involved just one more time for making this book a reality.

Hey, let’s take a look at that gorgeous cover one more time, shall we?

MJ-12-newcover

It’s so very, very pretty. And when I finally get to a bookstore this evening, seeing it on a shelf will make it even prettier.

I’ll be staring at it gleefully tonight at Borderlands Books in San Francisco, where I’m doing a reading and signing at 6 p.m. And if you want a signed copy and aren’t in the San Francisco area, let it be known that the good people at Borderlands will be happy to ship one to you. Just give ’em a call.

By the time you read this, I’ll be on a plane heading west, so keep your eyes out for various guest posts and such coming out today. If you’re a fan of my work and want to help out, please share on whatever Facechats or Snaptweetgrams you have at your command. It’s all greatly appreciated.

And of course, you can now order the book from AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-A-MillionMysterious GalaxyBorderlands Books, and/or through your local bookstore via Indie Bound. You can also feed your KindleNookKobo, Google Play and Apple iBook devices as well.

Enjoy the book!

MJ-12: Inception acknowledgements

MJ-12-newcoverMJ-12: Inception is my fourth novel (and wow, that’s kind of strange to think about!), and it’s now become tradition that I put the book’s acknowledgements up here on the blog on the day before release. The folks who helped get me to this point — fourth novel, launching a new series in hardcover — can’t be thanked enough. It really does take a village.

Here’s the acknowledgements from the book:

***

There are a lot of folks who helped me get to the point where I could launch a new series, and more still who helped with this particular book. But first, I want to talk about the first real “spook” I ever met.

In 1991, while at American University in Washington, DC, as part of a journalism internship program, I took a grad-level course called “The US Intelligence Community.” Dr. John Macartney, Col. (Ret.) USAF, was the professor—and he was fantastic. Dr. Macartney taught at the National War College and was a former commandant of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Defense Intelligence College. His clear and simple teaching style, which nodded to the glamour of spycraft while underscoring the real work of intelligence, made the topic fun and accessible. My final report was on foreign intelligence in business and trade affairs; Dr. Macartney loved it and even asked if he could include the paper in the syllabus for future classes. That kind of recognition from a real “spook” made for a very proud moment. Sadly, Dr. Macartney died in 2001. I’ll be forever grateful to him for that first introduction to intelligence
studies.

There was a point in my life—two separate points, actually—where I considered actually working for the US intelligence community. I think Dr. Macartney’s professionalism, humor, and enthusiasm played a large part in that. Ultimately, I decided that life wasn’t for me, but my experience in the classroom, and in starting the employment process, left me with a profound appreciation for those who sacrifice so much and perform their duties with integrity in order to keep us safe. Yes, the intelligence community’s track record is blemished—repeatedly—with scandal and unsavory activities. Yet there are 113 stars carved into a wall at CIA headquarters, each one representing an officer fallen in the line of duty, thirty-three of them remaining anonymous even in death. Those individuals
deserve our thanks, and they have mine here.

MJ-12: Inception is the first book in the MAJESTIC-12 series, and I wouldn’t be sitting here with a new series without the folks who made the first possible—namely, all the folks who bought and enjoyed the books in the Daedalus trilogy. At this point, the number of fans and reviewers and bloggers is getting too numerous to mention, but each and every one of you has made a major difference in my life and has made this book possible. Thank you.

Sara Megibow remains one of the best literary agents—and one of the best people—I know, and she’s done so much to ensure this new series gets off the ground properly. Jason Katzman and Cory Allyn at Night Shade Books continue to believe in my work, and are superb editors besides. They’re a joy to work with. And let it be known that Richard Shealy is one of the finest copyeditors I’ve had the pleasure to work with.

Finally, and as always, none of this means a thing without my wife, Kate, and my daughter, Anna, to share it with me. Their love and support make it all worthwhile.

***

This went to press before a lot of super-cool awesome people said so many nice things about the book, many of which ended up on the dust jacket. So I want to thank Dan Hanks, Paul Weimer, Mike Underwood, Beth Cato, Chris Roberson and the legendary Harry Turtledove for their very kind words.

And I want to thank fellow scribes Fran Wilde, Mary Robinette Kowal and the wise and delightfully profane Chuck Wendig for letting me take up some of their digital real estate in the coming days. To even share shelf space in a bookstore with these writers is a privilege.

Also, a shout-out to Brianna Scharfenberg, publicist extraordinaire at Night Shade Books, and all the folks who contributed to the utterly amazing, fantastic design of the book, inside and out. Thank you for all your hard work!

Finally, thank you, gentle readers. I know some of you have been following this blog for years. You’ve bought and enjoyed my books and made this whole thing possible, and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know.

Learn the secrets of my BBQ sauce recipe

Yeah, there’s a headline I’ve never written before! But it’s true.

I’ve been playing with BBQ sauce recipes for years now, starting off with a basic recipe — equal parts ketchup, mustard, molasses and apple cider vinegar —  refining and playing with it ever since. And today on Fran Wilde’s Book Bites, you get to enjoy the results of all that experimentation.

This sauce isn’t as thick as the stuff you buy in the stores, but store-bought uses thickeners and chemicals and corn syrup and all kinds of awful. If you’re a BBQ purist, you can use this sauce as a mop during smoking, then set it on top of the firebox to simmer and thicken throughout the day. (And if the words “mop” and “firebox” aren’t in your BBQ lexicon, well…that’s OK.)

My thanks to the luminous and crazy-talented Fran Wilde for having me on her Book Bites blog. She’s totally aces and you need to be reading her award-winning books, y’all. Plus, she’s a great human to hang out with at a con.

Speaking of cons, this is my last full day at DragonCon, which has been the usual excellent experience. There’s only a handful of copies of MJ-12: Inception left at the booksellers in the vendor hall, so get thee hence or wait until Tuesday when it hits bookstores. Of course, if you wait, those copies won’t be signed. Just saying.

Finally, here’s your regular reminder about Tuesday’s launch-day reading/signing at Borderlands Books in San Francisco at 6 p.m. If you’re in the area, come on by and say hello!

Back at DragonCon, plus all kinds of news

The-New-Dragon-Con-LogoThere are Jedi roaming the streets and wizards in line at Starbucks. Must be DragonCon!

The city of Atlanta seems to treat con-goers with good humor and patience. It’s a very friendly city to begin with — strangers strike up conversations with one another on the subway, customers are greeted more than a “NEXT!” and there’s a slightly languid pace about things, especially when compared to New York. If it weren’t for the heat and humidity…!

And there’s a bunch of stuff I want to share today, as it’s getting close to the launch of MJ-12: Inception on Tuesday and, after a slow summer, the news piles up:

  • Win my books on Tor.com! The lovely people over at Tor.com are doing a sweepstakes! First prize is a copy of MJ-12: Inception as well as all three books in the Daedalus trilogy. Four second place winners get MJ-12: Inception. All you gotta do is comment on this post to enter. You have until 12 p.m. on Sept. 6 to enter.
  • MJ-12: Inception made a couple fresh lists of September must-have books, which is delightful. Tor.com lists it in its monthly “genre blenders” roundup, and io9 has it in a post called “Add All 19 of These New Science Fiction and Fantasy Books to Your September Reading List.”
  • I was interviewed by fellow writer Amanda Faith for today’s edition of The Daily Dragon, DragonCon’s official news outlet. We talk about the con, the books, all kinds of things. Check it out!
  • I donated a signed copy of MJ-12: Inception to DragonCon’s annual charity auction, to benefit the Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency, so I hope folks go and bid! Details are here.
  • The Missing Volume as a ton of my books on hand for tomorrow’s signing at DragonCon’s vendor hall. I’ll be there at 1 p.m., so if you’re at the con, come say hi!

Phew. Lots of fun stuff here. Hope you enjoy, and have a great Labor Day weekend!

MJ-12: Inception in The Big Thrill, and a signing at DragonCon

Good morning! I’m about to swoop off to Atlanta for DragonCon! But first, I’m quite happy to report that I have an article in this month’s edition of The Big Thrill, the monthly magazine of the International Thriller Writers.

Readers may not that I don’t often opine on political matters, but when you write about government conspiracies, well, the topic is pretty relevant. So I talk about some of the political thinking behind MJ-12: Inception — the use of force, the importance of oversight, when boundaries may be overstepped. I mean, heck, I had a double major in English and government. Check out the article here.

(A big shout-out to J.H. Bogran and everyone at ITW that works hard on The Big Thrill and other efforts. Thank you!)

On another note of particular interest to DragonCon attendees, I’ll be doing a signing on Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Missing Volume, one of the vendors on the first floor of AmericasMart Building 2. As far as I know, The Missing Volume is the only place you can buy MJ-12: Inception in person prior to launch on Sept. 6. And of course, I’ll sign the heck out of it. Given that the book isn’t officially out yet, supplies are limited, so if you want a copy, better come early!

Amazing Stories reviews MJ-12: Inception

Another review of MJ-12: Inception is out today, and I’m quite pleased to say it’s a good one. This is from Matt Mitrovich, proprietor of Alternate History Weekly Update, writing in Amazing Stories. His verdict:

On the whole I thought MJ-12: Inception was an enjoyable secret history. I liked how Martinez made a point to recognize the sacrifices made by those in the intelligence community to protect their nation. Although there are certainly heroic characters from stories about espionage, members of the spy agencies can just as easily be the bad guys or, at the very least, hinder the hero from doing the right thing. Plus, superheroes are usually meant for flashy, epic roles such as fighting giant monsters or stopping alien invasions. You don’t usually see them in the more subtle role of espionage … MJ-12: Inception was an enjoyable twist on the superhero genre and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

I’m in the midst of writing what happens next, which comes out next year. For now, I’m grateful to Matt and the Amazing Stories crew for the review! Click here to read the whole thing, and remember that you can pre-order MJ-12: Inception from AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-A-MillionMysterious GalaxyBorderlands Books, and/or through your local bookstore via Indie Bound. You can also order your KindleNookKobo, Google Play and Apple iBook editions.

I’ll be at Borderlands Books in San Francisco one week from today!

MJ-12-newcoverBorderlands Books is awesome. Seriously, it’s one of the very best bookstores I’ve ever visited. Alan and Jude are fantastic people, and the staff is frighteningly knowledgeable and yet completely friendly and accessible. My wife did an article about their sponsorship model last summer, and I’m glad to report they’re still going strong.

So when I say I’m excited to launch MJ-12: Inception with a little reading and signing there, you know I mean it.

MJ-12: Inception launches next Tuesday, Sept. 6, in hardcover, and I’ll be at Borderlands starting at 6 p.m. to do stuff. If there’s a big audience, I’ll do a formal reading and Q&A, and if we’re small but mighty, I’ll do the same…with less formality? Whatever. I’ll bring beer. It’ll be fun. If you’re in the Bay Area, I totally hope to see you there.

And if you can’t make it, well, I’ll be signing whatever they have on hand, and you can give ’em a call and have them ship a signed copy directly to you. They’re awesome like that.

Also, if you’re in the Bay Area, or even if you’re not and just like the idea of helping out fantastic SF/F bookstores, I strongly urge you to consider becoming a Borderlands sponsor. You’ll be supporting a key piece of the SF/F community — not just in San Francisco, but throughout the country.

One more note: the Goodreads giveaway of MJ-12: Inception wraps up tomorrow night at midnight. So if you haven’t signed up yet, do it!
