Where I’m at Thursday at WorldCon

Today I’m heading down to beautiful (and ghastly hot) San Antonio, Texas, to participate in LoneStarCon 3 — the 71st World Science Fiction Convention. It’s my first one, and I’m excited to be a part of it.

I’ll be blogging and Tweeting regularly from WorldCon. In addition to whatever thoughts or fun stuff I might post, I’ll be starting each day with a quick update on where I’ll be and what I’ll be doing. So if you want to come say hi, get your copy of The Daedalus Incident signed, or tell me how the rigging on HMS Badger is historically inaccurate, you can find me easily.

It’s a light schedule today, as I’m flying in during the afternoon and helping set up the Booksworn & Friends party tonight. It starts at 8 p.m. in Suite 3436 at the Marriott Rivercenter hotel. (Venue subject to change, so check in on Twitter to be sure!) Here’s the flyer for it:

Needless to say, I’m in fine company. And what’s more…there are real, edible bugs to be had. Want a book? Eat a bug! It’s that simple. (Honestly, I’d probably pay for a book rather than eat a bug for one, but that’s just me. )

Hope to see you there!

Virtual reading and Q&A this Tuesday night!

I’m back from California…and about to turn right around and head to San Antonio for the 71st annual WorldCon. (My schedule’s here, by the way.) But before I head out for five days of geekery, I’ll be doing a virtual Shindig event this Tuesday night for those who either can’t make it to San Antonio or who simply just can’t wait.

The Shindig event starts at 9 p.m. EDT on Tuesday. All you have to do is click here to RSVP; you’ll get an e-mail reminder just before the event itself. Then all you have to do is surf on over and say hi. (You’re gonna need a Flash-enabled device to participate…sorry, iPad users.) I’ll be talking about The Daedalus Incident and reading a never-before-read-or-excerpted part of the book just for Shindig participants. This will also be your first chance to ask about The Enceladus Crisis, the sequel to Daedalus coming out this spring.

You can also ask about the whole Night Shade Books brouhaha that delayed Daedalus from its previously scheduled May 7 launch, though I think I did a pretty good job covering that in this guest post on Stefan Raets’ blog. I’ve been wanting to do a big what-the-heck-happened piece on the Night Shade/Skyhorse thing, and when Stefan expressed interest, I figured it was as good a time as any. So check out the post, and if you still have questions after that, come ask them Tuesday night!

My WorldCon schedule

Seems like this is officially a Thing Authors Do, so for anyone wanting to track me down at WorldCon — a.k.a. LoneStarCon 3 in San Antonio, Texas — this is what I’ll be up to. This will not only be my first WorldCon, but pretty much my very first science fiction convention, so I’m pretty excited to see what the fuss is all about.

Note that the list below respresents the official events I’m committed to attending and supporting. I’ll also be pulling duty minding the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) book in the dealer’s room from time to time, and like everybody else, I’ll be attending panels and standing in autograph lines.

My first signing…and people showed up!

meandmybooksI had a fantastic time yesterday at Mysterious Galaxy in Redondo Beach, Calif., where I gave my very first reading and signing. I’m pleased to report that there was a decent-sized crowd, and furthermore, said crowd included people I had never met before. So it was pretty gosh-darn real and author-y.

The photo shows you the awesome lengths the staff went to promoting the event, and I have to say, seeing an entire wall of The Daedalus Incident was pretty awe-inspiring. All told, it was a fantastic venue, and probably one of the very best independent bookstores I’ve ever visited. If you live in southern California and you read genre fiction, please give these great folks your business!

Of course, this being my first signing, I did have some friends stop by to say hi, which certainly filled out the group nicely. Thank you to Aaron, Brian, Marlene, Rob and John for coming out to the event; it meant a lot to see friendly faces there. And apparently, for a debut author on a weekend, it was a great turnout, according to the store. That’s awesome.

If you aren’t in this area, or if you are in southern California and had to miss the event due to some cataclysm, I’m doing a virtual Shindig event and reading on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 9 p.m. EDT. Just click on the link and RSVP — the whole thing is free.

And again, I’ll be at WorldCon in San Antonio in less than two weeks, with all kinds of things going on: panels, signings, SFWA booth appearances, parties, etc. I’ll be posting my WorldCon schedule in a few days. There may be giveaways. There will be fun!

Come see me tomorrow at Mysterious Galaxy in Redondo Beach!

Last reminder, I promise. Well, at least on this blog. I make no promises about Twitter.

Tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 17), I’ll be reading and signing at Mysterious Galaxy in Redondo Beach, Calif., starting at 2:30 p.m. PDT. Not only is it my first real-world signing, but it’s also your first chance to ask questions about The Daedalus Incident and its upcoming sequels: The Enceladus Crisis and the as-yet-unnamed third novel in the trilogy.

Mysterious Galaxy is at 2810 Artesia Blvd. in Redondo Beach. I’ll be there a full hour, because I know Los Angeles traffic is…trying. Even on a weekend. Seriously, I have no idea how you people do it.

Anyway, come on out and support a great local bookstore.  Local bookstores are a wonderful resource, so give ’em your business!

And if you’re in the other 99.9% of the world and want to see me talk about Daedalus, you can check out my online Shindig event, which is happening Aug. 27 at 9 p.m. EDT. It’s free to attend — just RSVP on the event page and I’ll see you there.

Also, I’m going to be at the upcoming WorldCon! LoneStarCon3 is happening over Labor Day weekend in San Antonio, Texas. I’ll be on three panels during the con, plus doing some other signings and stuff as well. Keep an eye on the events calendar on the right side of this page for more. And chances are, I’ll be hanging out at the SFWA booth in the dealers’ room, too. If I’m available somewhere, I’ll post it to Twitter, so keep an eye on that, too!

Aug. 17 signing at Mysterious Galaxy in Redondo Beach, Calif.!

One week from today, I’ll be at the fantastic Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in Redondo Beach, Calif., talking about The Daedalus Incident and, perhaps, what’s coming next. I’ll be reading from the book, signing, answering questions and generally hanging around.

Mysterious Galaxy is located at 2810 Artesia Blvd. in Redondo Beach. I’m there on Saturday, Aug. 17, starting at 2:30 p.m. The store has Daedalus in stock, and if you’re more of an ebook fan, they also sell the Kobo version online. Though, really, not quite sure how I sign an ebook. Maybe I just e-mail something nice to you? A haiku, perhaps?

There’s an event page on Mysterious Galaxy’s site, and there’s also a page up on Facebook for those of you who use it. (I’m intentionally not on Facebook…only so many hours in the day!)

Chances are, this will be my only West Coast signing event this year, so tell your friends, come on out and say hello!
