MJ-12: Inception acknowledgements

MJ-12-newcoverMJ-12: Inception is my fourth novel (and wow, that’s kind of strange to think about!), and it’s now become tradition that I put the book’s acknowledgements up here on the blog on the day before release. The folks who helped get me to this point — fourth novel, launching a new series in hardcover — can’t be thanked enough. It really does take a village.

Here’s the acknowledgements from the book:

***

There are a lot of folks who helped me get to the point where I could launch a new series, and more still who helped with this particular book. But first, I want to talk about the first real “spook” I ever met.

In 1991, while at American University in Washington, DC, as part of a journalism internship program, I took a grad-level course called “The US Intelligence Community.” Dr. John Macartney, Col. (Ret.) USAF, was the professor—and he was fantastic. Dr. Macartney taught at the National War College and was a former commandant of the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Defense Intelligence College. His clear and simple teaching style, which nodded to the glamour of spycraft while underscoring the real work of intelligence, made the topic fun and accessible. My final report was on foreign intelligence in business and trade affairs; Dr. Macartney loved it and even asked if he could include the paper in the syllabus for future classes. That kind of recognition from a real “spook” made for a very proud moment. Sadly, Dr. Macartney died in 2001. I’ll be forever grateful to him for that first introduction to intelligence
studies.

There was a point in my life—two separate points, actually—where I considered actually working for the US intelligence community. I think Dr. Macartney’s professionalism, humor, and enthusiasm played a large part in that. Ultimately, I decided that life wasn’t for me, but my experience in the classroom, and in starting the employment process, left me with a profound appreciation for those who sacrifice so much and perform their duties with integrity in order to keep us safe. Yes, the intelligence community’s track record is blemished—repeatedly—with scandal and unsavory activities. Yet there are 113 stars carved into a wall at CIA headquarters, each one representing an officer fallen in the line of duty, thirty-three of them remaining anonymous even in death. Those individuals
deserve our thanks, and they have mine here.

MJ-12: Inception is the first book in the MAJESTIC-12 series, and I wouldn’t be sitting here with a new series without the folks who made the first possible—namely, all the folks who bought and enjoyed the books in the Daedalus trilogy. At this point, the number of fans and reviewers and bloggers is getting too numerous to mention, but each and every one of you has made a major difference in my life and has made this book possible. Thank you.

Sara Megibow remains one of the best literary agents—and one of the best people—I know, and she’s done so much to ensure this new series gets off the ground properly. Jason Katzman and Cory Allyn at Night Shade Books continue to believe in my work, and are superb editors besides. They’re a joy to work with. And let it be known that Richard Shealy is one of the finest copyeditors I’ve had the pleasure to work with.

Finally, and as always, none of this means a thing without my wife, Kate, and my daughter, Anna, to share it with me. Their love and support make it all worthwhile.

***

This went to press before a lot of super-cool awesome people said so many nice things about the book, many of which ended up on the dust jacket. So I want to thank Dan Hanks, Paul Weimer, Mike Underwood, Beth Cato, Chris Roberson and the legendary Harry Turtledove for their very kind words.

And I want to thank fellow scribes Fran Wilde, Mary Robinette Kowal and the wise and delightfully profane Chuck Wendig for letting me take up some of their digital real estate in the coming days. To even share shelf space in a bookstore with these writers is a privilege.

Also, a shout-out to Brianna Scharfenberg, publicist extraordinaire at Night Shade Books, and all the folks who contributed to the utterly amazing, fantastic design of the book, inside and out. Thank you for all your hard work!

Finally, thank you, gentle readers. I know some of you have been following this blog for years. You’ve bought and enjoyed my books and made this whole thing possible, and I appreciate you more than you’ll ever know.

Learn the secrets of my BBQ sauce recipe

Yeah, there’s a headline I’ve never written before! But it’s true.

I’ve been playing with BBQ sauce recipes for years now, starting off with a basic recipe — equal parts ketchup, mustard, molasses and apple cider vinegar —  refining and playing with it ever since. And today on Fran Wilde’s Book Bites, you get to enjoy the results of all that experimentation.

This sauce isn’t as thick as the stuff you buy in the stores, but store-bought uses thickeners and chemicals and corn syrup and all kinds of awful. If you’re a BBQ purist, you can use this sauce as a mop during smoking, then set it on top of the firebox to simmer and thicken throughout the day. (And if the words “mop” and “firebox” aren’t in your BBQ lexicon, well…that’s OK.)

My thanks to the luminous and crazy-talented Fran Wilde for having me on her Book Bites blog. She’s totally aces and you need to be reading her award-winning books, y’all. Plus, she’s a great human to hang out with at a con.

Speaking of cons, this is my last full day at DragonCon, which has been the usual excellent experience. There’s only a handful of copies of MJ-12: Inception left at the booksellers in the vendor hall, so get thee hence or wait until Tuesday when it hits bookstores. Of course, if you wait, those copies won’t be signed. Just saying.

Finally, here’s your regular reminder about Tuesday’s launch-day reading/signing at Borderlands Books in San Francisco at 6 p.m. If you’re in the area, come on by and say hello!

Back at DragonCon, plus all kinds of news

The-New-Dragon-Con-LogoThere are Jedi roaming the streets and wizards in line at Starbucks. Must be DragonCon!

The city of Atlanta seems to treat con-goers with good humor and patience. It’s a very friendly city to begin with — strangers strike up conversations with one another on the subway, customers are greeted more than a “NEXT!” and there’s a slightly languid pace about things, especially when compared to New York. If it weren’t for the heat and humidity…!

And there’s a bunch of stuff I want to share today, as it’s getting close to the launch of MJ-12: Inception on Tuesday and, after a slow summer, the news piles up:

  • Win my books on Tor.com! The lovely people over at Tor.com are doing a sweepstakes! First prize is a copy of MJ-12: Inception as well as all three books in the Daedalus trilogy. Four second place winners get MJ-12: Inception. All you gotta do is comment on this post to enter. You have until 12 p.m. on Sept. 6 to enter.
  • MJ-12: Inception made a couple fresh lists of September must-have books, which is delightful. Tor.com lists it in its monthly “genre blenders” roundup, and io9 has it in a post called “Add All 19 of These New Science Fiction and Fantasy Books to Your September Reading List.”
  • I was interviewed by fellow writer Amanda Faith for today’s edition of The Daily Dragon, DragonCon’s official news outlet. We talk about the con, the books, all kinds of things. Check it out!
  • I donated a signed copy of MJ-12: Inception to DragonCon’s annual charity auction, to benefit the Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency, so I hope folks go and bid! Details are here.
  • The Missing Volume as a ton of my books on hand for tomorrow’s signing at DragonCon’s vendor hall. I’ll be there at 1 p.m., so if you’re at the con, come say hi!

Phew. Lots of fun stuff here. Hope you enjoy, and have a great Labor Day weekend!

MJ-12: Inception in The Big Thrill, and a signing at DragonCon

Good morning! I’m about to swoop off to Atlanta for DragonCon! But first, I’m quite happy to report that I have an article in this month’s edition of The Big Thrill, the monthly magazine of the International Thriller Writers.

Readers may not that I don’t often opine on political matters, but when you write about government conspiracies, well, the topic is pretty relevant. So I talk about some of the political thinking behind MJ-12: Inception — the use of force, the importance of oversight, when boundaries may be overstepped. I mean, heck, I had a double major in English and government. Check out the article here.

(A big shout-out to J.H. Bogran and everyone at ITW that works hard on The Big Thrill and other efforts. Thank you!)

On another note of particular interest to DragonCon attendees, I’ll be doing a signing on Saturday at 1 p.m. at The Missing Volume, one of the vendors on the first floor of AmericasMart Building 2. As far as I know, The Missing Volume is the only place you can buy MJ-12: Inception in person prior to launch on Sept. 6. And of course, I’ll sign the heck out of it. Given that the book isn’t officially out yet, supplies are limited, so if you want a copy, better come early!

Check out the Cuba Writers Program reading this Monday in New York

If you follow this blog, you generally like good writing, right? Of course you do! So here’s a great opportunity to attend a super-cool reading by attendees of the inaugural Cuba Writers Program this coming Monday in New York City.

The reading features Cuba Writers Program instructors and students, including Alden Jones, Donna Bolding, John Hill, Beatrice Hill, V. Hansmann and Katrina Woznicki. (Full disclosure: Katrina is my wife. She’s also a far better writer than I am.) They’ll be reading from their work, some of which came out of the program itself. And no doubt they’ll talk about the great program they had down in Cuba this past May.

The reading is Monday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m. at the Cornelia Street Cafe, which is at (unsurprisingly) 23 Cornelia St. in New York City, right by the West 4th subway station in the West Village. I’m told it’s a very cool space, and I’m looking forward to all the great writing and everyone talking about their experiences in Cuba.

So come out and support these great writers, have a snack, be entertained, feed your brain. See you there!

It’s August! Time for an update!

Where does the time go? Already August, and there’s a heap of stuff happening in the coming weeks. I figured it was high time to start letting you know what’s up.

Obviously, the biggie is the release of MJ-12: Inception on Sept. 6. Night Shade Books went all out on the printing with this one — really cool interior design, spiffy hardcover, even some embossing on the jacket. Of course, the jacket also has blurbs from Harry Turtledove, Chris Roberson, Beth Cato and Mike Underwood, along with some reviews that haven’t hit yet. Overall, I’m very, very happy with the reaction thus far.

You’ll start to see a lot of reviews and guest posts and interviews crop up in the weeks ahead, especially as we get closer to Sept. 6. There’s a lot of gracious folks out there willing to have me show up in their digital space, and I’m very grateful for it. (And I pay it forward, too: If you’re a creative type, here’s how you get a guest post on this blog.)

And then there are events! Online and off! Here’s the three big ones I have coming up.

DragonCon: Yes, I’m heading down to Georgia for the third straight year, which means I love me some DragonCon. The people are great, the panels are top notch. I just got my preliminary schedule today and I’m pretty jazzed about what I’ll be doing. More to come on that, but you can certainly count on a reading at the con, some great panels and as many giveaways as I can stuff into my suitcase.

Launch night reading at Borderlands Books in San Francisco: After DragonCon, I go home for an evening, then promptly head off to San Francisco (after dropping my kid off for her first day at school, because priorities). On Sept. 6 at 6 p.m., I’ll be celebrating the launch of MJ-12: Inception at Borderlands Books in the Mission District. It’s such a great store and totally worthy of your business. If you’re in the area, I hope I’ll see you there.

Reddit r/Fantasy AMA: And on Sept. 13, I’ll be doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything for the Reddit newbies) over on r/Fantasy. Bring your questions and I’ll bring my answers.

There’s more, of course. There’s always more. I’ll definitely keep you posted. In the meantime, you can pre-order MJ-12: Inception from AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-A-MillionMysterious GalaxyBorderlands Books, and/or through your local bookstore via Indie Bound. You can also order your KindleNookKobo and Apple iBook editions, too.

And if you’re among the few who’ve got your hands on it already, I’d ask that you give it an honest review over at Amazon and/or Goodreads. That sort of thing really does help, and it’s greatly appreciated.

Pre-order the Geeky Giving anthology, coming August 9!

I was super proud to have a story in this charity effort, and super proud of the story I submitted for it. Now, you can get all the Geeky Giving stories in one handy-dandy publication: Geeky Giving: A SFF Charity Anthology, to benefit the Barrow Neurological Institute!

Geeky Giving is now available for pre-order on Amazon, Kobo and iTunes in ebook — and print is coming! Love the cover, and honored to have my name on it. This is such a great anthology, full of very different stories all dealing with the mind, neurology and related ideas.

My own story, “Mind Flight,” is certainly my hardest hard-SF story, and I really loved writing it. Plus, bits are set in Iceland, which inspired my work quite a bit when I went there a few years ago.

You get a bunch of great stories from fantastic writers like Mary Robinette Kowal, K.B. Spangler, Shaun David Hutchison, Amanda Bonilla, Jeff Somers, Sierra Dean and more. And again, all the money goes to support the life-saving work of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Arizona.

Get great fiction, feel good about doing it. What’s not to love? Go forth and pre-order!

How about some MJ-12: Inception spoilers for you?

I’m serious here — if you’re looking forward to MJ-12: Inception and want to crack the book fresh, sans spoilers, you should probably click away now.

Good? Good.

I have an article coming out in Writer’s Digest next month about outlining in Excel. Yes, I’ve written about this before, but this is going to be in a real-deal publication for writers. I’m pretty excited. It should hit the web some time next week.

As part of that, the magazine suggested I put part of my outline for MJ-12: Inception online so folks can check it out and see how I did it. I agreed — but with the caveat that only part of the outline be used. Because, well…why put the whole thing up there when I actually want people to, you know, buy it?

So if you click here, you’ll be taken to a Writer’s Digest page that will allow you to download part of the Excel outline I used to write the book. Yes, you’ll get characters, plot points, action, setting, and a bit of detail — roughly 30% of the total book in outline form.

See? This is why I’m warning against spoilers. For real.

Now, that said, the outline did deviate from the book in ways both large and small, so this outline isn’t 100% representative of what’s coming out in just over a month. Character names have changed, the order of scenes and chapters has changed, and some stuff just didn’t make the cut. There’s also entire scenes that aren’t represented in the outline that got added in revision or on the fly.

Personally, I’m not too worried about having all this out there; I hope it entices new readers to give the book a shot. And as for spoilers, if you’ve picked up all the mass-market paperback editions of the Daedalus trilogy, you’ve already read three chapters. Plus…well, I didn’t give away the other 70%. So there’s that.

If you’re excited about the book — and I hope you are! — and want to get a sneak peek at it, and maybe see how the sausage is made, surf on over and check it out. There’s also a blank template you can download to give it a whirl on your own.

But seriously…spoilers, sweetie. Don’t do it if you’ll regret it. Go have a snack instead.

Celebrating Gary Gygax’s birthday with the wayback machine

PlayersHandbook8CoverI very clearly remember the day I got to speak to Gary Gygax.

It was the summer of 2000, and I was a business reporter for The Associated Press in Seattle. My primary coverage areas were Microsoft, Amazon and Boeing (with Starbucks and RealNetworks in there as well), and I was waiting for a press conference to start on the Microsoft campus.

Phone rings: It’s Gary. I had reached out to him as part of a story I was doing on Wizards of the Coast’s new d20 “open-source” gaming initiative — you can read it here. The story was a bit of a passion project for me, and I took a lot of pleasure in visiting Wizards’ headquarters and talking with the team behind 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons. And of course, in the interest of balance, I felt compelled to reach out to folks at Steve Jackson Games, White Wolf…and the man who created it all.

Just then, a Microsoft P.R. person tried to herd me into the auditorium. “Mike, we’re starting in five minutes.”

I put my hand over my cell phone receiver. “One second. I got Gary Gygax on the line.”

The guy stopped and smiled. “That’s cool!”

Yes. Yes, it is very, very cool.

A fresh MJ-12: Inception review for your Monday

When you go and try something completely different, as compared to your previous work, you wonder how your current fans will receive it. So I’m quite pleased, and a bit relieved, to see that fellow scribe Luther Siler enjoyed MJ-12: Inception.

Luther was a big fan of the Daedalus trilogy, and MJ-12: Inception is darker and grittier and more realistic, which he notes here:

MJ-12: Inception is a very, very, very different series from the Daedalus books.  So much so, in fact, that were it not for his love of genrebending (or, perhaps, hatred of the idea of genre) bleeding through, I’d not have been able to guess that the books were by the same person.  That said, I can find out quickly if you are interested in reading the book by asking a very short question:  How do you feel about Cold War superheroes? Okay.  You just told yourself whether you should read this book or not.  And if I have any influence, you should.

For the record, I don’t hate the idea of genre! In fact, I really like playing with them — this time, meshing superheroics with those great Cold War spy thrillers and conspiracy tales I grew up with. And by all accounts, it’s seemed to have worked for readers so far. The difference in voice is a very conscious decision as well. If you’re gonna write a spy thriller, it should read like one, after all.

My thanks to Luther for his kind words. You should check out his work if you’re looking for some cool stuff to read; his Benevolence Archives stories will sate any cravings for fun and adventure.

As for MJ-12: Inception, we’re still on track for Sept. 6. I just whipped up my to-do list for launch, and there’s so much cool stuff coming down the pike. Guest posts and interviews! Podcasts! We’ll be doing giveaways! And not only will you get to see it at DragonCon, but I’ve also lined up a launch-day reading for my West Coast friends as well.

More to come. And remember, it’s up for pre-order at from AmazonBarnes & NobleBooks-A-MillionMysterious GalaxyBorderlands Books, and/or through your local bookstore via Indie Bound. You can also order your KindleNookKobo and Apple iBook editions, too.
