Here’s to an exciting new year!

You know, 2012 was a pretty good year, all things considered. My family is healthy and happy, I had a great time at my job, I traveled fairly extensively. It was fun.

Oh, and I got a book deal on my 40th birthday. You know, little things like that.

Of course, this year could prove to be just as exciting, if not more so. The Daedalus Incident hits stores in a little more than four months, which will be the fulfillment of a pretty major dream and ambition. You’ll likely run into me at a couple of conventions over the course of 2013, and I’ll be updating the blog and Twitter as to my whereabouts. I’m also going to be popping up across the Internet on blogs and podcasts, too. I’m pretty jazzed about it all. It’s going to be fun.

But, as they say in the infomercials, THAT’S NOT ALL.

Now that I’m going to be a Published Author, the next step is to become the author of more than one published novel. My contract with Night Shade Books calls for a single novel — The Daedalus Incident. After that, we’ll see what happens next. Perhaps there’ll be enough interest (and commensurate sales) to warrant a sequel. I also have a couple of other projects in the works that I hope to get to tell you about in the coming year. Yes, they’re all speculative fiction of one stripe or another, but they’re very different stories. Whatever the next book is, I’m going to try to get it sold.

I like where I’m at in this new part-time career. I see it as a time to explore my options, see what works and try new things. Sometimes, things won’t work, and that’s cool too. I actually tried to write a short story for an anthology and found that the subject matter — very dark, very horrific — just wasn’t something I did well. Or, rather, it was something I was unwilling to explore further so that I could do it well. Lesson learned: I don’t do dark. I do thrillers and adventures, and some of these could get pretty grim, but I also do heroes. I need the light.

Anyway, I hope you’ve enjoyed following me on this little road-less-traveled thus far, and I hope you’ll enjoy The Daedalus Incident when it comes out this year. (THIS YEAR. HOLY CRAP!) I also hope I’ll be able to give you some other fun things to read about as well. Thanks for checking it all out.

May you and yours enjoy a healthy, happy and prosperous 2013!
