Final cover of The Venusian Gambit — now with a blurb!

You’ve already seen the great cover art by Lauren Saint Onge for The Venusian Gambit (out May 5!), but there was just one thing missing…and now it’s there.

TVG-cover-final

That awesome blurb is from the super-talented writer Beth Cato, author of The Clockwork Dagger and, coming June 9, The Clockwork Crown, both from Harper Voyager. Here’s the non-squinting version:

“Everything the finale of a trilogy should be — constant suspense, genuine characters…. If you start this at bedtime, don’t plan on getting any sleep until you hit The End.”

Beth has been a fan of the Daedalus series since The Daedalus Incident came out, and readily agreed to give Gambit an early read. She’s been extraordinarily generous with her time and her recommendation here, and I’m very, very grateful. You should definitely check out her books and her blog, which not only features a lot of magical steampunk goodness, but also some of the best baking recipes on the Internet.

Seriously, she as a recipe for baked French vanilla mini-donuts up today. I’m hungry just looking at them.

Thank you, Beth, for your kind words and all your support. Everyone go buy her books!

Using your platform: Speaking out on issues as an author

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, and I believe the opportunity is nigh. Should authors use their platforms — blogs, social media, panels and signings, whatever — to opine regarding the issues of the day? Apparently, the Romance Writers of America, in a recent magazine piece for members, advises against taking “extreme viewpoints.” Exhibit A:

What? No. Just no.

I firmly believe that anyone and everyone should feel free to speak out on the topics that are important to them. I live in the U.S., and freedom of speech is enshrined in the Constitution. Hell, I made my living via the First Amendment as a journalist with The Associated Press. I’m rather fond of freedom of speech. Advising people to bury their consciences and keep their mouths shut is just bad advice — period, full stop.

As is their wont, both John Scalzi and Chuck Wendig wrote about this quite eloquently, so I would direct you to their posts. To summarize both: Speak out if you’re so inclined. Your conscience isn’t worth keeping a book sale.

Here’s where I tend to trip up: I’m rarely so inclined. And I’m gonna tell you why.

The first Venusian Gambit ebook files are in!

gambitOh, it’s so nice to see a book in near-book form. It’s happening, people. The Venusian Gambit is happening.

I just got the advance ePub files for book three of the Daedalus series this morning from the good folks at Night Shade Books/Skyhorse. And I immediately sent them out to a big list of reviewers and authors, because I’m excited for folks to read it and enjoy it and, ideally, say nice things about it.

I’ll also note that it’s an advance uncorrected proof. So there’ll be a few spelling errors, undoubtedly. The ePub file isn’t all prettied up. You get the idea.

If for whatever reason you feel you should’ve gotten a copy and did not, first…check your spam folder. If it’s still not there, drop me a line. If I know you, I’ll rectify the matter expeditiously. If I don’t know you, you may have to make your case as to why you get a free book, because, you know, I want to put my kid through college.

Printed ARCs will be coming very soon, but there aren’t that many, and most are already earmarked for folks. I’ll do my best to cadge one and, maybe, do a giveaway or a charity bit for it. Stay tuned.

And be on the lookout for the final cover. I expect it any day now, and it will be glorious. Promise.

Kudos for The Enceladus Crisis cover

enceladuscover-frontIt’s that time of year when the “best-of” stuff starts coming out, and Shadowhawk (a.k.a. Abhinav Jain) saw fit to include the cover of The Enceladus Crisis in his roundup of the 12 best covers of the year. He says:

The cover for The Daedalus Incident was every bit as awesome as the cover for The Enceladus Crisis and what I find really amazing in this new one is that it is so different and unique from “typical” space opera where you have starships fighting it out in the void. Well, this is the same thing, but with sailing ships in space. That’s just too awesome for words really.

I agree. Lauren Saint-Onge did the fantastic cover art, while Victoria Maderna and Federico Piatti did the design work. Abhinav also reiterated a few nice words about the story, too:

Michael debuted last year on a very strong note with The Daedalus Incident and he carries forward almost all of the same energy and excitement of the debut, telling a new story with characters I’ve come to really care about, in a setting that is wildly creative unlike any space opera I’ve read before.

That is pretty darn awesome. Thanks, Abhinav!

By the way, we’re just about ready to unveil the cover of The Venusian Gambit, probably in the next week or two. I’m going to do a big splash on another web site (that gets more traffic than this one, because duh), but I’ll repost here as well. Lauren did the art again, and let me tell you, it’s crazy good. I can’t wait for you guys to see it.

Same agent, new literary agency

Even the most casual repeat reader of my blog knows the esteem in which I hold super-awesome-agent Sara Megibow, who has represented me since 2012 and helped me navigate some unique and troubled publishing waters. She’s tenacious, perceptive, sharp and a great negotiator — all while being a really kind, cool human. That’s a tough balance right there, and she does it effortlessly.

And now she’s opening her own shop, Megibow Literary Agency LLC.

Sara was with Nelson Literary for nine years. As Sara described it, it was simply time for her to hang her own shingle and make a real go of it. She’s doing it with Kristin Nelson’s support, too, which was great to see.

So because of all this, I have a new literary agency — and the same agent. Of course, I had the option to stay with the former agency or find a new agent entirely. That never really crossed my mind, though. Again, Sara is awesome.

For now, Sara’s agency site is under construction, and she’s not yet open to new queries. But if you keep up with her on Twitter, you’ll learn soon enough when she’ll be open to submissions again. If you’re in the market, I doubt you could do much better when it comes to agents.

Congratulations, Sara!

Order signed copies of my books from Borderlands Books and Mysterious Galaxy while they last!

I’ve been fortunate enough over the past month to visit two of the world’s great independent SF/F bookstores – Borderlands in San Francisco and Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego. And because I was in those particular neighborhoods, I signed some books.

Signing books, by the way, never gets old.

Now, I’m not in everybody’s neighborhood, so the chance of finding signed copies of my books at your local bookstore is pretty slim. Thankfully, these two bookstores do a brisk business in mail order and e-commerce, so if you’re inclined to give the gift of Daedalus and Enceladus this holiday season, you’re in luck. And I’d be mighty grateful and flattered.

Here’s the thing, though. Both stores have a limited supply. I signed probably a dozen of each at Mysterious Galaxy, but that was back in early November. And I signed roughly half that at Borderlands on Friday. So you can certainly take a chance and order online from either place, but there’s a risk you’ll end up with an unsigned copy.

So here’s what you do: Drop them an e-mail or give them a call. It’s that simple. Just click on their sites (linked above) for the contact info, and ask if they have any left. If they do, go ahead and pull the trigger on that purchase.

How to respond to bad reviews (Hint: Don’t.)

I spent this past weekend up in the Catskills with family and friends, where we hiked and made food and drank good beer and let the kids experience some honest-to-goodness natural settings. It was awesome. Turns out, though, I missed something that set my Twitter feed aflame.

Author Kathleen Hale wrote a piece in The Guardian about confronting an influential book blogger/reviewer who gave her book one star on Goodreads. And by confronting, I mean seriously going to extreme lengths to find this particular blogger. Hale divined the pseudonymous blogger’s real identity through Internet searches, paid for a background check and showed up at her house.

Good Lord.

Hale justifies this rather unjustifiable action by stating that the review was oddly biased and factually in error and that she was being “catfished.” In reading her piece, I got the sense that she wanted to gain some measure of justice, or at least convince herself that the blogger who may have “sabotaged” her book wasn’t really credible, even though the damage was already done.

So I’m going to put something out here that, I think, should be something every author should take to heart: This is not OK.

Thank you, New York Comic Con!

So this was the scene this morning at Night Shade Books’ booth at New York Comic Con.

Yes, that is a line. And no, the bathrooms were nowhere near the booth.

I signed at least 150 books this morning, and we ran out before my hour was up. Many thanks to the Night Shade crew for rustling up all that interest, and a huge thank-you to everyone who waited in line for copies of The Daedalus Incident and The Enceladus Crisis. You are all lovely human beings, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

And remember, The Venusian Gambit is out in May! Here’s the Barnes & Noble pre-order page. You can also get it from Mysterious GalaxyBooks-A-MillionAmazon or Amazon UK and Chapters in Canada. (E-book and audiobook pre-orders will be available closer to launch.)

Mysterious Galaxy reading! Venusian Gambit pre-orders! Plus wikipedia!

There’s stuff going on! You should totally be informed of these happenings, so here you go. I suppose I could’ve made you sift through three different blog posts, but that would’ve been slightly lame. Besides, I don’t get paid for putting ads up on here, so page-views aren’t really a concern. Anyway.

First off, I’m excited to be returning to Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore for my second reading/signing/Q&A event. Sadly, the Redondo Beach store is no more, so I’m heading down to beautiful San Diego to visit the MG mothership on Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. I hadn’t planned on being in southern California, actually, but there’s an off-site meeting for work, and the excellent folks at MG agreed to have me over afterward. Perhaps word got out that I brought beer last time. (I am not above beer bribery.) Anyway, if you’re in the area, come on out and say hello. I’ll likely read from The Enceladus Crisis and maybe even give a sneak-peek at The Venusian Gambit.

Speaking of The Venusian Gambit, the pre-order sites are up and running for the print version, so you can go and order one now! Which is…super-early, actually, but why not? Think of it as a gift for your future self. I haven’t seen a page up on Barnes & Noble yet, but you can order it from the aforementioned Mysterious Galaxy as well as Books-A-MillionAmazon or Amazon UK and Chapters in Canada. Or better yet, you can bug your local independent bookseller about it via IndieBound, which makes you a fine individual in my eyes.

Note that the pre-orders are for print only. E-book pre-orders tend to come later on, and I don’t expect them until next year. Same goes for the Audible version, which I do expect will be a thing given that we got the first two.

Finally, I’ve discovered the first mention of my work on Wikipedia, which was a small but proud moment. The entire Daedalus series has been listed on the Saturn’s moons in fiction page. And wow, there’s a lot of great works that play in the Saturn system. Happy to be bulleted among them.

Author FAQ: On what I can realistically do for you

We’ve tackled writing, agenting, traditional publishing and self-publishing, and yet there are still a handful of frequently asked questions left, primarily surrounding the question of what I personally can do to help you, a potentially aspiring writer, in your career.

Yep, I’ve been asked all these questions, and it’s very flattering; by no means do I want to discourage anyone from asking me stuff. Hopefully, these answers will be a good place to start.

Ready? Of course you are.
