Talking about The Empire Strikes Back on SF Signal

Sequels are hard. Let’s just put that out there now. It’s a balancing act of old and new, what worked and what didn’t, favorites and newbies. Change it up, but don’t mess with it too much. Only recently, with The Enceladus Crisis finished and work well underway on The Venusian Gambit, did I really stop to consider all the permutations and pitfalls of sequelizing. Kind of glad it didn’t occur to me sooner.

Today I have a nifty guest post up on SF Signal, talking about one of the better sequels ever made: The Empire Strikes Back. For Star Wars fans, it’s pretty much the top choice for best of the six canonical movies. For me, reflecting on it as a writer gave me a lot to chew over as I plotted The Enceladus Crisis. (And one smart reviewer even picked up on that.)

Go check it out, and then read the rest of SF Signal, because it’s awesome.

And while I’m here, I just wanted to say thanks to all the folks who have picked up The Enceladus Crisis over the past week. As it turns out, a lot of folks picked up the first book, The Daedalus Incidentas well. I definitely appreciate it, and I hope you enjoy them both.

The Enceladus Crisis acknowledgements

enceladuscover-frontWhen The Daedalus Incident was finally out in bookstores last August, I did a post listing the acknowledgements as printed in the book, as well as an update; if you remember, getting Daedalus out the door was a rather memorable process, and I wanted folks to know they were appreciated. So with past as precedent, I thought I’d publish my acknowledgements for The Enceladus Crisis as well, because there’s lots of people who helped with this book as well, and they deserve a shout out.

The printed acknowledgement is below, with a few updates coming right after that.

My Favorite Bit about The Enceladus Crisis

Hugo Award-winning author and all-around good human Mary Robinette Kowal has been giving a leg-up to authors through the “My Favorite Bit” feature on her blog. And I’m fortunate enough to be there this week, talking about my favorite bit about The Enceladus Crisis.

I had fun writing this one, because I got to think about and elucidate on why I enjoy writing historical fantasy as opposed to completely made-up worlds (secondary-world fantasy, for those who like their proper labeling). And my favorite bit is, in essence, how history can inform character and plot when it comes to the Daedalus series.

I’ll leave it at that for now; click here to read the bit on Mary’s blog. And do check out her books as well. Her Glamourist Histories novels even feature cameos from a certain Doctor — the genesis of her latest one is described here. If that doesn’t convince you to read her stuff, then…well, I got nothing. I can’t help you. At all.

Many thanks to Mary for the guest post!

The Enceladus Crisis excerpted on io9!

There’s a brand new excerpt of The Enceladus Crisis up on io9.com today! The scene in question depicts the battle that’s pictured on the cover of the book itself, and it’s something that’s not part of the ebook previews or anything else. So really, you should go read it now.

Of course, if you like all things SF/F, you’re already reading io9, because it’s intensely awesome. Right? Of course you are. Many thanks to Charlie Jane Anders and the io9 team for making this excerpt happen. Go check it out!

Also today, Tor.com reviewed Enceladus. While reviewer Stefan Raets took issue with the book’s multiple plotlines, he nonetheless had nice things to say as well. To wit:

Even though it has some issues, The Enceladus Crisis is worth checking out, especially if you enjoyed The Daedalus Incident. After all, there aren’t many books out there that manage to move, in just a few pages, from explaining the ultra-dense polymers used in radiation shielding to magic and alchemy. The Enceladus Crisis also sets everything up for a third novel that promises to be spectacular…

I thought the review was quite fair, and Stefan did his usual thoughtful, thorough job. (Of course, I liked that last bit the best.) I’m continuing to work through The Venusian Gambit, the third and final book in the Daedalus series, and I hope it lives up to that promise.

Finally, I joined a SF Signal “Mind Meld” with a bunch of other fantastic authors and commentators on the SF/F books we love to read over and over again. The topic actually made me think a little bit about how my reading habits have changed since becoming an author, and I hope my contribution to the Meld was worthwhile. My thanks to Paul “Prince Jvstin” Weimer for inviting me.

Enceladus sets sail!

enceladuscover-frontToday’s the big day: The Enceladus Crisis has been released into the wild. All you folks who pre-ordered the book (thank you!) now have it in your hands and/or electronic devices. I hope you enjoy the heck out of it.

Lots of folks were busy on Facebook and Twitter and blogs today, talking about the  book. Thank you all, so very much! I’ve gotten a lot of support from all kinds of people, including fans. I know, right? I have fans. Plural. Still trying to wrap my head around that one. But they’re awesome, and I appreciate the support. And if you’re of a mind to spread the word further, I’d be mighty grateful!

A few bits of news: Audible now has a snippet of the audiobook up for your listening pleasure. The audiobook is narrated by Bernard Clark and Kristin Kalbli, the same folks who did an outstanding job on The Daedalus Incident. Give it a listen.

The Enceladus Crisis Goodreads giveaway is over, sadly, but we had more than 400 people sign up for it. If you were one of the 10 lucky winners, congratulations! If not, well, I expect we’ll do another giveaway at some point, either on Goodreads or elsewhere.

There’s more to come in the days and weeks ahead. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, I’ll be enjoying this:

Pop quizzes and giveaways

It’s officially launch week for The Enceladus Crisis! I’m very excited to see this one come out, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

To kick things off, I took Tor.com’s Pop Quiz at the End of the Universe, which is probably the best name for an author interview series in the history of such things. I talk about the book, of course, but also lots more fun stuff, like what I’d take with me to a desert island and which robot sounds are the best. Many thanks to Tor.com for all the support.

Also, the Goodreads giveaway of The Enceladus Crisis ends at midnight Pacific time. There are ten copies up for grabs on Goodreads, so if you’re reading this before midnight, hurry up and get clicking. And if you’re reading this on Tuesday or later, you’ll have to get your book at a store like other people.

There’s more stuff coming up this week, including an excerpt from the new book, so stay tuned! And if you’re just finding this site, everything you need to know about the book is right here.

Everything about the The Enceladus Crisis in one handy post!

enceladuscover-frontThere’s only a few days left before The Enceladus Crisis hits bookshelves, so I thought it’d be good to have all the pertinent info about the book and my other work in an easy-to-reference post — especially for folks stumbling across this blog, and my books, via the guest posts, excerpts and interviews coming over the next few weeks. Click on the book titles for summaries and jacket copy and fun stuff like that. So…here we go.

The Enceladus Crisis, published by Night Shade Books, is the sequel to The Daedalus Incident, my debut novel. Publishers Weekly called Enceladus “rivieting…a uniquely imaginative science fantasy tale,” and SFSignal said “the sequel continues the first novel’s mix of alchemy, intrigue, mystery, science fiction and high adventure into an entertaining package.” GeekDad and Amazing Stories liked it too. You can get The Enceladus Crisis at AmazonBarnes & NobleKoboiTunesGoogle Play and through your local independent bookseller (check out IndieBound for your nearest indie bookseller). The audiobook is available via Audible, too.

TDI-bigcoverThe Daedalus Incident, for its part, turned out to be a pretty good debut, having been named one of the best SF/F books of 2013 by Library Journal and BuzzFeed. Folks seemed to like it. Now, do you need to read The Daedalus Incident before reading The Enceladus Crisis? I wrote Enceladus with enough callbacks to the first novel so that, if you stick with it, you won’t need to read Daedalus to enjoy it. That said, I do think folks who read Daedalus will have a leg up. That’s pretty normal, though, when it comes to series. Click here for a list of vendors carrying Daedalus, including e-book and audiobook.

So far, Daedalus and Enceladus are the two official books in the Daedalus series. The third, titled The Venusian Gambit, is due out next year, and I’m in the midst of writing it now. There’s also a self-published e-novella, The Gravity of the Affair, that’s set in the Known Worlds of the series, but it’s a stand-alone story. It’s on sale for $0.99 right now, and I’m not sure how long I’m going to keep it there, so get cracking. There’s also an audiobook version of Gravity as well.

And if you’re wondering about me personally, the Author tab will help. I’m also on Twitter, but I avoid Facebook like the plague. If you like beer, you can follow me on Untappd as well.

So there you have it. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy the books!

Kirkus names The Enceladus Crisis among May’s best speculative fiction reads

enceladuscover-frontThe word spreads: Kirkus Reviews placed The Enceladus Crisis among the best speculative fiction reads coming out in May. Reviewer John DeNardo added that Enceladus may work well for fans of classic literature looking to branch out into science fiction and fantasy, noting that it’s the second book “in an exciting series of books described as ‘Horatio Hornblower in space.'” Which, really, is a pretty spot-on description.

Also worth noting: Tor.com listed The Enceladus Crisis among the month’s new releases as well, which is a great thing given that so many fans of SF/F read the site religiously.

Again, it’s worth noting that while Amazon and other online outlets have begun shipping The Enceladus Crisis to preorder customers, the book won’t be available in ebook or audiobook until May 6. And I don’t think it’ll be on bookstore shelves until then, either — but if you see it out there beforehand, do let me know!

New review of The Enceladus Crisis

For those who’ve seen the back cover of The Enceladus Crisis, it’s no secret that GeekDad rather liked the book. But it’s still nice to see the full review, which hit the Internet today. Reviewer James Floyd Kelly writes:

“Martinez delivers again…. This isn’t steampunk, okay? This is something new and unique and completely entertaining. Hard science fiction in one corner and Alchemy in the other. And the best part is when the worlds and characters come together…you’re in for a wild ride.”

Many thanks, Jim, for the kind words! As a geek-dad myself, I’m thrilled to be reviewed there! There’s less than a week to go before The Enceladus Crisis drops on May 6. You can preorder print and/or ebook copies on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, iTunes, Google Play or wherever fine books are sold. (Also, support your local bookseller! IndieBound can help you find the nearest one.) The audiobook edition is courtesy of the good folks at Audible. Also, tthe Goodreads giveaway wraps up next week as well, so if you’re of a mind to try to score a freebie, check it out. May 6! Did I mention May 6? Next Tuesday! #SFWApro

Two weeks until The Enceladus Crisis is out!

enceladuscover-frontAll right, then. It’s starting to get exciting.

The Enceladus Crisis lands on May 6, full of sailing-ships-in-space action and pan-dimensional shenanigans. Plus Saturn. I’m excited to see it out there and, judging by the reviews, I think it’s going to go well.

You’ll start to see me pop up on a variety of sites in the coming weeks, so I apologize in advance if you get a little me-fatigue. It happens, even to me. But I’ve got a nice variety of stuff coming, not simply just “hey, I wrote a book” posts and whatnot.

And I’ll be on podcasts too, starting with the Skiffy and Fanty Show’s Torture Cinema, which I record Friday. I supported the show’s fundraiser for WorldCon, and won the opportunity to name the next film to get the Torture Cinema treatment. Being a jerk, I gave them Highlander II: The Quickening. But I’ll be right there with them. It should be fun.
